Range/Origin: China, Mongolia and Japan; introduced into the US in the 1700's

LANDSCAPE VALUE:

• accent
• large planters
• informal and interesting barriers
• blends well with Japanese or bonsai gardens

CULTURAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Exposure: full sun; tolerates some shade
• Water: regular, deep; once per week during hot season
• Soil: tolerant, good drainage
• Propagation: vegetative cuttings
• Maintenance: minimal; do not prune, valued for natural form

J. chinensis 'Phitizeriana' is a large group of popular varieties
