If the master gardeners there can't help you, ask to be referred to an extension horticultural agent.

My experience is that common Bermudagrass will grow almost anywhere if watered adequately.  Back ca 1984 I also tried a five foot wide strip of side oats grammagrass.  The Santa Ana Bermudagrass crowded it out but it still comes back from seed in various locations away from the lawn where it receives very little water.  You might consider trying a test strip of that.
