[Arid_gardener] Fountain Grass, Red/Purple

Hi Marjorie,

Thanks for your question. Purple Fountain Grass is native to Africa and
is right at home here in the Southwest desert. This species does not
reseed like Green Fountain Grass which is considered an invasive
species. The best times to cut fountain grass back is in the early
spring after the danger of frost is past, or in late summer (August).
Cut the entire clump to about 6 inches tall, with a flat top. I find
the easiest way to do this is to pull the leaves together upright and
use duct tape or packaging tape and wrap snugly once or twice around the
clump. Then cut below the tape at the appropriate height. This creates
a natural looking plant when the leaves grow back.

A great reference is Pruning, Planting and Care by Eric Johnson, ISIBN
0-9628235-5-1 which you can find locally at most bookstores or on-line.
The retail price is $16.95 but I have seen it for sale for much less.

I hope this helps.

We live in Phoenix Arizona and have planted several Pennisetum setaceun
(Red
Riding Hood) in our garden. I have read that some people prune them
back.
Should we do this in Phoenix, and if so how far back? and when?

thanks
Marjorie Mead
