I work at a school.  I found some students picking up what they were calling acorns from a tree we have planted on campus.  I do not know what the tree is.  It has dark green smallish leaves, the tree is young and has a narrow upright appearance.  The acorns are dark purpulish brown blending into beige.  
  The students said they have been eating them since last week and I noticed they are still alive.  I gave them a lecture on eating items from plants without a grown-up telling them it is safe.
Do you know what kind of tree this could be.  I could send you a photo, but need an email adress to attach it to.
