Keep in mind that essential carbohydrates are manufactured in the foliage through photosynthesis. I would never prune foliage on a fruiting or blooming specimen except to excise that branch that slaps you along side the head every time walk by or one which otherwise creates an unacceptable hazard. I would never prune the baren branches because its leaves are a vital organ. 

If, on the other hand, it tends to assault your mate discriminately when he or she walks by, you might, depending on your temperament, want to reconsider that strategy.
