[Arid_gardener] pocket gopher control

For whatever it is worth, this is how I eliminated gophers on two ocassions; 
one in a home in San Diego on a gohper infested canyon lot and here in my 
Phoenix home over twenty years ago where I have not seen them since.  In 
both cases, the varments disappeared. The five years following the treatment 
in San Diego were clean.

Go to an auto supply and buy several highway flares. Open up the mound and 
clean out the  tunnel. It should extend two directions from your opening. If 
you find two mounds some distance from on another, use both. Although the 
evidence of their demise was impirical, I assumed the flares were effective.

Get a piece of plywood or any other impervious sheet to cover the open hole.

Light a flare and place it in the tunnel. You don't need to rush. The flare 
will burn for quite a while until it totally consumes itself.

Place the cover over the hole and seal all around the edges with dirt. You 
might leave the covered chamber sealed a few days. I predict that you won't 
see any new mounds but, in case I am wrong, repeat the procedure in the new 
mound.

Flares can be ptetty hot. Use them cautiously and follow directions. Years 
ago, I worked for a company that required it's employees to carry flares in 
the Company vehicles as a safety measure but I am pretty sure they can still 
be purchased over the counter.
