Hi Tobie --
Yes, it is possible to grow apple trees in Maricopa County. The key is selecting a variety that has a low chilling requirement (number of hours per year when temps are below freezing), has early maturing fruit, and is self-pollinating.
I am currently growing an Ein shemer apple (on M-111 rootstock) that I purchased at Baker Nursery in Central Phoenix. Other varieties recommended by the University of Arizona for Maricopa County are Anna, Beverly Hills, Golden Dorsett and Gordon. For more information on growing decidous fruit trees in the Valley, check out U of A publication http://cals.arizona.edu/pubs/garden/az1269/ Deciduous Fruit & Nuts for the Low Desert.
Hope this helps!
