I have a ficus that has been diagnosed with disease and is nearly 3/4
dead. It is planted in a front bed no more than 1-2 feet between my
home and a flagstone walk. It has never uprooted the foundation or the
flagstone. I know that I am going to have to replace it and I don't
want to get the same kind of tree, but do like the talk narrowness of
the tree. I would like something similar that will also not uplift my
foundation or flagstone in light of its close proximity to the home and
the walk. Can you recommend a tree for the close quarters?
It's also on the north side of the home, which does not get the sun
until around 3 or 4 in the afternoon.
Your advice is appreciated.

Although I'm not in a dry climate I'm hoping you can answer this
question.
I recently had a tree stump and all associated surface roots ground out
of my lawn. This resulted in an area of approximatly 600 sq. ft., with
no grass at the present time, in which wood chips are mixed with the
soil. The soil is clay.
Should I remove the soil/wood ship mixture, and replace with top soil
before seeding the area with grass seed? So far, I'm inclined to leave
the wood chips mixed in and just level out the area, add top soil as
needed, then seed.
Thank you for any response.

I have a Ficus Nitida tree planted on the west side of my yard. It is
very large, planted over 5 years ago and looks healthy. Although I was
told by the nursery where I bought it that it was a very clean tree,
some months it drops huge amounts of berries and it sheds green leaves
continually every day. I fertilize it four times a year per the
nursery's instructions, and I deep water. The mess caused by this tree
is getting to be a real nuisance. Any advice on the care of this tree
would be appreciated. Also, should this tree be trimmed and if so, in
what manner? Thank you!

We have a mature silk oak in our backyard. Our backyard is grass.
Generally, it does a major leave drop in the spring. This year, the
leaf drop has continued through the summer and the tree is beginning to
look bare. Also, there are many dead branches. And, I noticed a
sap-type substance on one branch I just removed. A few years ago, we
lost a very large branch from the tree. There was a sap-type substance
on the branch that broke off. We've never fertilized or watered the tree
in any special manner. It is watered when we water the lawn. Can you
tell me what might be wrong with the tree and what we can do to save it?
We've lived in our home for about 10 years and bought the house partly
due to this mature tree. Thanks for your help.

Please give me suggestions for desert trees. I prefer to avoid palo
verde and mesquite varieties because of constant pruning required.
Mature heighth of around 30' and umbrella of 20' would be ideal.

I planted a peach tree about 3 years ago in a raised flowerbed. I try
to only water the flowers around the drip line and just mulch the up to
the trunk. I did amend the soil pretty deep--about 2 feet. With the
recent rains, the tree is really tipping and I'm afraid it will
completely topple over if I don't do something quickly. I am concerned
about 2 things that I may have encouraged and I don't know how to fix
either one! The tree must not be sending it's roots down because water
is so readily available and did I create a "pot" for it to grow in by
amending the soil around it so that it won't now send it's roots down
into the hard ground below. Is there anything I can do to help my
tree?

Something is killing my grapfruit and orange trees in my yard. The
branchs die off really quickly. It appears like something is getting
under the bark. My grapfruit tree has a large splotch where there is an
opening and the sap is running out. There are cracks in the bark
running up the tree. Can someone get me to someone that can help me with
this. This same thing happened to my Shammel oak tree a few years ago
and it died completely.

We have four queen palms. The one on the Southwest side of the home is
doing well. The three on the Northwest side take turns looking bad and
good.
The one we are most worried about looks straggly. We have never
"stripped" them so that frequently it appears the new growth is stymied
from expanding out as it should. Most recently the big new growth fond
near the center got damaged by the wind and is broken and hanging over.
What can we do to increase its chances for survival? How should we
trim/feed them. My husband puts food (bought at Moon Valley) right
around the trunk. They are watered frequently.
Thanks.
