Tomatoes are not commonly eaten by bugs unless birds have first opened up a cavity that gives them a point of entry, at least as I have observed the phenomena, Lucy. Pick the fruit while still on the greenish side and let ripening finish on a kitchen window sill. If tomatoes so ripened have a less desirable flavor, my taste buds have never detected it. Bird netting on loose temporary structure built to your fancy is usually effective against birds. Reflective devises I have tried in the past seemed to me to be more effective in attracting the flock to my back yard than it was in scaring them away. Tomato worms will strip the foliage but birds turn their noses up and won't touch these creepy crawlies. Too ugly.
Contrary and reinforcing opinions are invited to magnify the corporate intelligence of Master Gardeners and the gardening citizenery.
