Such a project would have to be a group effort, Karen, if it has any real merit. A lot of talent and practical experience in this valley is squandered because it is not shared freely with the rest of the community where its results would be multiplied by improving the soil and increasing production in home gardens. Master gardeners already provide that function but it could, perhaps, put new twists and additional incentives into the program . . . . . talking off the top of my head.
Anyway, lets see if this concept develops any roots. Without getting carried away, a simple "bible of home gardening" might be valuable even if all the stuff is already out there scattered over hells half acre.
A group of interested people could draft a blueprint and its objectives that could become a model for other geographical areas.
Your thoughts invited.

Actually, Dick, I've been wondering when we're going to have our very own "Martha Stewart of the Low Desert". Wanna take it on? Some beautiful 4-color production, with by-the-month commentary on what's going on in the garden, and what can \ should be done, plus seasonal recipes. Maybe it's out there & I just don't know about it? I literally am still trying to figure out when my produce is ready for harvest - I put it in the ground, then am not sure when to keep an eye out for picking it.
Carolyn, thank you so very much for that insightful e-mail about tomatoes.
I was taken aback (and then shocked at myself) when a friend from Philadelphia said she wakes up in the summer & decides what she's going to serve for dinner from what's ready in the garden. It's becoming clear that one of the reasons I was shocked was that she'd even want to spend any time out of doors in June \ July \ August, much less that things are growing out there.
Happy gardening!
Karen
