You did not indicate your location. Assuming the low desert, ranunculus
are usually planted in Oct-Nov. See the
Flower and Bedding Plant Guide for the Low Desert at

Buffalo grass is pretty coarse and not well suited for use in lawns.
But the U of A and TAMU have been developing cultivars that might work
in the low desert. Call our main office at the number listed at
http://cals.arizona.edu/maricopa/garden/html/general/question.htm
for the current status.
Square foot gardening as well as other intensive vegetable gardening
systems work very well. One caveat is that the close spacing
recommended works best with the smaller vegetable varieties.
