The standard answer seems to be to exclude them with netting. As a practical
matter however, I find that birds become entangled in the netting and I
dislike trying to rescue the poor, panicked things. I have found mylar
strips tied to and around the plants work as well, without injury to the
birds. Mylar can be found at nurseries and home improvement stores in
spools. Just unwind as much as you need and cut it.
