[Arid_gardener] Mesquite Tree

I had a large mesquite tree that went down in the wind. It was pulled out by most of the root so had to be removed, but some of the root remained and could not all be taken away. Now I can get nothing to grow in the area where the mesquite was.... it all dies, and I have heard that mesquite trees are poisonous to all other plants. Can anything be done?
