Could be that the area is too alkaline for whatever it is that you are
trying to grow in it. It is likely not due to the previous mesquite
tree. Before planting anything that is not an alkaline-loving AZ desert
native, try lowering the pH with sulfur and loosening up the soil by
working in gypsum.
