Lauri, that advice makes no sense whatever to me and I have grown a few
avocados here and in San Diego since 1954. Avocados have no dormancy phase
and I believe the more healthy foliage the healthier the tree, generally
speaking. Tell them that you have spoken to the Master Gardener network and
the consensus said, "No, no, no, let the leaves grow!"
Avocados are never pruned unless its branches block entrance to your front
door.
Can you reach these people and let them make the decision? Then, if the tree
croaks, you are free and clear of blame.
