One reason may be that the fruits' skins hardened during the hot summer when
there was a period of very little growth.  Then when growth resumes as in
our so-called "second spring" in October, the fruit tries to enlarge but
can't due the hard skins causing the skins to split.  A similar problem may
occur with uneven watering .  In the summer, more frequent watering may keep
the skins more resilient so the splitting problem will be reduced or
eliminated when growth resumes in the fall.
