Subject: Annual Metro Tech Garden Fair

Saturday October 21

This event is the evolution of the All Garden Clubs annual public sale or festival once held at the University of Arizona Maricopa County Cooperative Extension (MCCE) until outgrowing the facility several years ago. Sponsored by the Master Gardener Volunteers and hosted by the Metro Tech High School facility, this activity is designed to encourage a wide range of non-profit clubs related in some way to the home culture of edible and ornamental plants and other non-commercial agricultural activities to raise operating expenses while promoting their activities to the public. Over and above routine expenses, money raised is used to benefit or improve communities, neighborhoods or other non-profit organizations. No personal aggrandizement is allowed under the law for members of non-profit clubs. The labor and a majority of the materials at this function have been generously donated by individual club members and other interested parties.

The VOSG has purchased plants from a local, retail nursery and potted them up for resale. Other materials are donated. The attraction at functions like this one is the stuff that hobbyists like you and I propagate and culture for our own pleasure in our own homes, items that don't normally show up on retail shelves.

A grand vosg success at the Metro Tech fair relys entirely upon your contributions of time, labor and materials. This, below, is what we ask every one you to do for your club and your community.

Examine every rooted plant, every potted specimen, tools, ornamental pots, trellises, stakes, plant markers and garden books, etc., in your homes and gardens that would attract a buyer. Look for idle, excess or surplus materials that you can clean up and make presentable. Disposing of surplus is a benefit to gardeners because, refilling that space again creates great exhilaration to true souls of the earth. Antique appearing tools like hoes and rakes and cultivators stimulate our agrarian senses. If you find only one item in your stash fit for donation, sacrifice it to the cause. The true measure of generosity is the act of giving chreished possessions to others while expecting nothing in return.

This is not, however, a rubbish or junk sale. If it cannot be reconditioned to like-new, or if you would be chagrinned to give it to a friend, throw it in the trash where it belongs. Plants showing serious wilt or dieback and other signs of decline are not sale candidates but thank you just the same. Tip; most loose rake, hoe and shovel handles and heads can be re-united permanently with construction glue.

We are gardeners with varying degrees of skill sculptured with practice and experience. Our exhibit and merchandise will appeal to home gardeners. Contributing one's mental and material assets stimulates the soul and feeds the psyche.

Start working on your contributions now. Call me, Dick Gross, at 623-939-4570 if you have any questions or need help. My email is rkgross3 at cox.net. No less than ten volunteers will be needed to set up the booth, man our tables, interact with the public and clean-up after. Twenty, perhaps working shifts would be better. Contact me to volunteer. A good time is assured.

An email later will address the accumulation of and arrival timing of your material at Metro Tech early on October 21st.

Dick Gross, Member VOSG Board of Directors.
