I keep a bag of diatomacious earth to control ants and many other insects.
It my eyes don't decieve me, it has been quite effective. In a yard once
teeming with ants and cockaroaches, I haven't seen one in a couple years. I
applied it with a duster at first but later just threw the stuff around by
hand. Avoid breathing the diatom skeletons. It can, I've been told, scratch
one's lung tissue the same way that it scratches the guts of crawling
insects making them bleed to death, in a manner of speaking. I believe,
someone correct me if I'm wrong, the dust is environmentally safe if you
don't inhale a lot of it. I also believe that there is little or no harm to
benneficial insects.
But, I am a novice. Any comments Master Gardeners and insect specialists? I
should do a search on the internet but just too tired tonight.
