There probably is an optimum time for pruning it but it really doesn't seem
to matter. We had an Engelmann Prickly Pear that came up in place on its
own and we had to prune it back regularly because it rambled across the
front yard rooting as it went. Eventually it had to be removed because of
all of the scarring from the pruning. Any pruning should be done at a
joint.. I just pruned back a Bunny Ears last week because it was getting
too close to the street and it locks okay but you can tell where it was
pruned.
