[Arid_gardener] RE: Seed Sources for Northeast Phoenix Area

Hi Dianna -- For your 85022 zip code, northeast Phoenix, I recommend
SummerWinds Nursery (on Tatum, north of Bell Rd). I have found they are very
good at stocking vegetable, herb and flower seeds when it is the right time
to plant here. Also, they tend to stock varieties that are suited to our
climate and short growing seasons.

Baker Nursery (40th St, just north of Osborn) has a fantastic selection of
seeds that are appropriate for our area and they also stock seeds at the
right time for planting here.

You can also buy seeds at other nurseries, home improvement stores (Home
Depot, Lowe's) garden centers, and even a 'big box' stores (Target,
Wal-Mart). My only caveats when buying from these sources are that they
don't always seem to offer the best varieties for our area, at the correct
time for planting here, and sometimes the seeds are old. Almost all seed
packets have a "Packaged For" year printed on them, and you should check
that date any time you are buying seeds. The older a seed is, the less
chance it will germinate.

There are lots of online sources for seeds, but my favorite is Native
Seed/SEARCH , a non-profit organization selling seeds of crops traditionally
grown in the American Southwest and Mexico. Check them out at
www.nativeseeds.org. They also have a retail store at 526 N. Fourth Ave in
Tucson.

Hope this helps!
