[Arid_gardener] Bark Split Problem

I have a chitalpa tree that overnight developed a very large bark
split that measures about 3 feet by 3-4 inches. The tree was planted
about a year ago as a 36 inch box and grown into at least a 48 inch
size by now. Now that the bark is split, what treatment is suggested,
especially since it is no longer recommended to use a tree paint or
filler in the cracked area? Is there a way to help the bark adhere to
the tree so there is not an opening at the edge of the bark? Would
tracing the bark around the split with a sharp knife help? What about
wrapping the tree? Currently, the cambium looks good and strong, but
is exposed to the elements. What are the chances of bacteria or fungi
using the opening to attack the tree?
Also, there is the question of why this happened. Various reasons
have been given: rapid growth, a tendency for this hybrid to split,
damage from a strong wind storm that occurred that night, being in an
area where the winter lawn that had been seeded was receiving multiple
waterings daily, and a disease process. Has anyone had experience with
bark splits, especially in chitalpas?
Thank you so much for your help. Ginny
