Christa, if you sent a photo or detailed description of this plant with your
email, it did not come through.
However, a sound approach, I believe, is to have one, or better, several
master Gardeners examine the plant. If it is voluntary, it probably is a
weed or one you would rather plant in your neighbor's yard. If you are a
member of a garden club, pass it around as an educational exercise.
Take the same evidence to your favorite Retail Nursery. Those folks know
more than we give them credit for and public and customer service is to them
an important facit of dealing with the public.
I believe that if you took parts of the plant to the Maricopa County
Cooperative Extension, someone would know what it is, but, those public
servants are extremely busy and you would be doing them and yourself a favor
if you try first to make the id yourself from catalogues or whatever
commercial resources you have. After the identification, you become an
expert. The best sources for such information that I have used often are, in
my humble 0pinion, the local retail nurseries. Start with the one nearest
you or one that you patronize.
