Tomatoes are primarily self pollinated having recessed styles that are not
accessible to insects. A few exceptions are some of the heirlooms with
exerted styles like some the potato leafed types that are also susceptible
to cross pollination. Most pollination occurs in the early morning when the
pollen is still fresh and manually shaking the plants helps. But if the
temperature is in the 50s it is too cold. There is a product called
"Blossom Set" that is also said to help but I don't have any experience with
it.
My tomatoes under a frost cloth were doing just fine with blossoming and
setting new fruit. Until last Friday. The freeze at 21 degF under two
layers of frost blanket zapped the plants. Hindsight suggests I should also
have strung a few incandescent lamps under the frost blankets.
