Ginny, a technique I've used and recommended to friends is to drive around
the neighborhood and get ideas from established landscapes. If you see
something interesting, knock on the door and ask the occupant about certain
plants you see in their yards. He or she will be, I've found, usually eager
to answer questions, unless their dinner is getting cold on the table.
Nurseries are not apt to carry species marginal in that area. See what sets
on their shelves. Locate them in your phone book.
Other good sources are commercial and State establishments who usually use
proffessional landscapers who likely know their business. If a plant or bush
flourishes around the Capital building or the Holliday Inn, it will surely
do as well in this front or back yard.
The Maricopa County Cooperative Extension has a wide array of species on the
grounds at 4341 E. Broadway.
If your son plans to stick around for a while and has given you free rein,
you have time to do it right the first time. Run your ideas through this
forum.
But, get some idea what kind of a landscape your son would be compatable
with and make a rough drawing first or while you scope the neighborhood.
Maricopa county once had a voluntary group that would congegate at a
candidates yard and design a landscape. I don't know if the panel is still
active.
If it was my yard, the critical priority would be, could I feed off the
landscape.
