Paul, I have been taught, and I've practiced this advice for 40 years: Dead
wood should, as a general rule, be pruned back to comfortably into green
wood to allow it to callus properly. There may be exceptions to that rule
that do not occur to me. A pruning expert will surely have the courtesy to
tell me I am wrong if that is the case. This is an important consideration
to amateur gardeners and if there is a correct technique or procedure, have
the kindness to let us know in this forum, the primary purpose of which is
the expansion of truth.
