Using your forefinger and thumb, snap your forehead and note rather solid
rap. Now, fill your right ckeek with air and thump it. You should get a
hallowish sound. A hallow, caverness echo, sort of, is ripe. That is the way
my granddad tested the fruit on the Nebraska farm in 1930. Cantalope is
different. The ripe fruit should have a rich musk aroma a bit like an armpit
that has been out in the yard working in hot sun all day. Rubbing the skin
of the cantaloupe with your thumb first may bring some of the aroma to the
surface.
If the thumping of both objects has a hollow ring, Steve, stay close to a
phone.
