[Arid_gardener] The best trees?

Hi,  I would like your judgment on what the best trees would be to replace dead ficus trees.  It would be place in the front yard where grass is.  I would like something that would not get very large, would be somewhat  different and would flower, but not to messy.  Also, evergreen and could stand up to frost.  I was thinking, bottle tree, wisteria, or a tree I have seen, but don't know the name of, it's evergreen and has flowers something like a fairy duster. Thanks for your advise.
