Diane, I suggest that you brouse several retail nurseries and see what is setting on their floor. Ask lots of questions.
Another good activity is to walk the grounds of State and Federal landscapes. They usually employee proffessional landscapers who would rather be shot than plant anything that won't grow here. Another productive activity is, as the price of gasoline permits, to drive up and down nieghborhood streets for ideas. When you find something you like, flatter the owner by ringing his or her doorbell and asking about it. Resorts like Camelback Inn and others are excellant places to get ideas.
You can trust your nursery with questions about hardiness. They do not like to get returns.
Personally, I like citrus. It will stand up to pruning, it is an excellant hedge and reasonably clean. I have five varieties in a small landscape and, incredibly, all held up quite well in the hard freezes that recently devastated several other species in my yard and neighborhood.

Hi, I would like your judgment on what the best trees would be to replace dead ficus trees. It would be place in the front yard where grass is. I would like something that would not get very large, would be somewhat different and would flower, but not to messy. Also, evergreen and could stand up to frost. I was thinking, bottle tree, wisteria, or a tree I have seen, but don't know the name of, it's evergreen and has flowers something like a fairy duster. Thanks for your advise. Sincerely, Diane Mohr P.S. Would be planting in fall.
