Subject: Phoenix roebelenii Help
Hi -
I don't know if you take requests for plant help. I obtained several
articles from you recently about container gardening, AND YOUR HELP HAS BEEN
FANTASTIC. Thank you very much all that very valuable advice. I live in Sun
City, to the north of you.
Yesterday I bought a distressed Phoenix roebelenii at a home and garden
store. It was the last of their "crop". They had reduced the price and
included a free large planting pot (it was already in the new pot, which is
12 inches in diameter across the top.) The plant is about 36" tall above
the soil and quite dense. It was a very handsome plant before it was
neglected. I figure that this plant could probably be saved if I make the
effort, which I would like to do.
About 10% or less of the leaves are brown and crispy. A lot of the rest of
the leaves are still green, but not rich and healthy looking. The soil in
the pot is VERY wet. I plan to put it on my patio, out of direct sunlight,
but certainly not in the dark. The afternoon temperatures right now are
about 90 degrees here.
Can you recommend a treatment plan for this pigmy date palm? I would like to
know about how wet to keep the planting mix, whether to add fertilizer or
not, and if you have any other advice to give it a chance to survive.
Thank you very much for taking the time to answer, if you can.
Sincerely, Mike Dougherty mikedougherty at peoplepc.com
