[Arid_gardener] Thorny branches on Clementine

We have a Clementine tangerine which was planted a year ago.  There are 3
branches coming off the trunk at about 2 inches above the ground; they have
1 1/2-inch thorns between the leaves, unlike the other branches.  Are they
watersprouts?  If so, I assume they should be pruned off?

Also, we have a buddlea (butterfly bush) planted last October and doing very
well.  However, this morning I noticed several leaves curling.  A few leaves
have brown or rust spots.  Examination didn't show webs of spider mites, but
there are some tiny shiny dots on the undersides.  Is that aphid secretion?
Malathion is a good control, right?
