[Arid_gardener] Your Radishes -- And Things To Grow When Temps Soar

Hi,

If you are trying to grow radishes now... that is the problem!

At this time of year; in our hotter-than-Hell climate -- squash, beans,
eggplant, and spicy peppers
grow great. (However you can plant tomato seeds and basil in mid July
-- for Fall harvest.)

Most radishes grow best in cool-to-cold temps.
Our radishes (in Tucson) grew huge and happy this winter, despite two
snowfalls and being
pounded by hail. Ditto for our fancy (French) round carrots, kohlrabi,
broccoli, and beets.
GARDENING IN WINTER IS FUN!!!

If you believe the problem may be your soil, purchase a few (cheap) 5
gallon pails or buckets in October.
Drill holes on the bottom sides -- for drainage. Purchase a large bag
of potting soil from Lowe's or
Home Depot -- mixing in any styrofoam "peanuts" you have on hand, for
aerating the soil.
Then plant the radish seeds. Most types will be ready for harvesting in
35 days. By February, you will
have eaten enough radishes to make you sick. :-)

Good Luck... and have fun!

I have been unable to successful grow healthy succulent radishes in all my years of vegetable growing in Phoenix. They are whimpy and hollow when harvested. Does anyone have a clue what I am doing wrong? I use lots of compost in my garden soil. Thanks.
