[Arid_gardener] Protecting figs from birds

Several years ago my wife thought of a way to save her figs from the birds.
I put a clean, old sock (or half a sock) over the figs as they begin to turn
color. Thereafter we check for ripeness by a gentle squeeze of the fig in
the sock. This also helps the bug problem a lot.

Hi, I have a large fig tree that fruits 2x per year. How can I harvest ripe
figs before the birds eat them? Also when I cut the figs open they often
have insects inside. How can I prevent bugs from getting in the fruit
without using a toxic insectacide?
thanks
