Sally, look for your local branch of the County Cooperstive Extension. Every county should have one. The personnel should have a ready answer to your questions.
Another option is to ask the nursery professional where you trade or go to any retail nursery with your questions. A plant-nursery employee should eagerly respond to challenges like this from a customer or direct you to an employ who can supply you with an answer. I have some experience with figs but the facts may not apply to a climate like your own.
When you have a answer, consider sharing it with this group that many may learn from your inquiry.

Subject: mission fig cultivation in zone 6b
I live on Long Island and have grown a mission fig tree in a pot for the past two years bringing it in each autumn. Would it be advisable to plant it outside with winter protection or continue to bring it in and keep it lightly watered?. It took some time before the plant looked healthy and began to grow this Spring. Should lime be added to the potted soil or ground if planted in the garden? What about fertilizer? I would truly appreciate your advice. Sallie McNeill Rynd Salitaflor at hotmail.com
