Have you considered root rot, Bill? What is the drainage and watering 
frequency? We forget that Ironwood is a desert species and may cope quite 
well for months without rain. Roots go deep following the water table.  I've 
dug up a few fifty year old stumps in Imperial, California where they thrive 
to an old age on half inch or less of annual rainfall.
