Question: What is causing the black dry leaf margins on Mexican honeysuckle plants?
I had several Mexican honeysuckle plants grwing in a bed underneath a very large Chilean mesquite in the backyard. When the tree came down in a storm I salvaged the honeysuckle by potting them for future replanting. I placed the pots up against the house on the south-facing covered patio. I watered them weekly during the summer and the plants seem to grow well.
A few days after new leaves appear the margins, beginning at the leaf tip, turn black and dry out. This condition expands from the margins inward toward the center vein. When about 50% of the leaf is dry and black it falls off. The plants flower steadily and new healthy leaves continuously emerge at the stem apex, only to also develop this blight after a few days.
These plants did not show this condition when in the ground, and the other bed of honeysuckles under a Texas Ebony tree in the backyard do not suffer this blight.
