I have seen magnolia trees here in the valley so they apparently can grow 
here bu t can't provide details.  I have never seen any for sale at a 
nursery.  Try asking at one of the locally owned nurseries (Berridge 
Nurseries, Baker Nursery, Gardener's World, et.al).  They can probably give 
you the information and may even order one for you.

The Sunset Western Garden Book lists about five dozen varieties - about a 
dozen are indicated as suitable for our region (Sunset Zone 13).
