[Arid_gardener] shade tree

Good afternoon,
There are quite a number of shade trees that will grow in your area and
provide good shade. You can find a number of highly recommended trees on
the Arizona Municipal Water Users' Association web site here:
http://www.amwua.org/conservation/landscape_plants.htm
One of my personal favorites for a West-facing shade tree is the Indian
Rosewood (Dalbergia sissoo). It's mostly evergreen, very low maintenance,
and if you plant a small one it will grow very quickly and not need staking.
Plant it small and then gradually over a couple of years raise the canopy as
it grows. It's also frost-hardy, maybe losing some leaves but no wood, and
water-thrifty once it's established. For a bright green leafy shade tree
it's among the best.
I hope that's useful.
Thanks much,
Tyler
