RE: New to Phoenix

Greetings Betty Solomon - welcome to Phoenix

It's never too late to start in your garden (although it might get too hot).
Your best bet is to meet with a professional. The investment will be well worth it; to interrogate the history of your landscape, assess your irrigation system, quiz your gardening practices, and
develop a plant list and design plan.

A more frugal approach would be to explore your neighborhood and take notes on what you see and like. Be sure to compare the exposures, micro-climates, and maturity. And don't be afraid to knock on some doors and just ask. You'd be amized by how welcoming your neighbors would be to talk about their gardens.

Also, research the garden nurseries about what plants will work with your watering system and gardening practices.

Here are two good resources for gardening and plant info in the Phoenix area:

Enjoy!

RE: New Citrus Planted

Greetings Betty Young -

Your newly planted citrus tree may just be expressing some transplant shock. However, based on your watering, I'm thinking you need to water a lot more.

Your watering method is very important in assuring the tree receives adequate water.
(drip irrigation? bubblers? flood irrigation? hose watering?)

Check out this handy dandy watering guide (you can also order a hard copy free):
http://www.wateruseitwisely.com/waterguide/index.shtml

Or, you may want to have a plant specialist or arborist come out to your home for on-site instruction. The investment could be well worth it.

Enjoy!

I am a member of the Desert Gardening Group and I have two questions:

1. Do you have a speaker on growing vegetables in the Valley who would be able to come to and speak at one of our gardening groups' meetings? We are located in central/north Scottsdale.

2. Are all you groups listed run by Master Gardeners or could our group be listed as well?

Thanks in advance for your assistance. If you would prefer to phone me my number is (480) 664-6939.

New to Phoenix and don't know what to plant in a 25' x 25' expanse of back yard that has mostly weeds. I'd like a ground cover, perhaps Lantana, that would be native to this area--or some other low-growing plant that you would suggest. Am I too late to try to grow such coverage this spring? Thank you for any advice you have to offer.

Planted a 24" box orange tree in early March. Recently groups of leaves are yellowing and dropping, then the stems are turning to deadwood. The main branches are dark green. Watering 2x per week 10-15 gallons. Water well surrounds the tree. Any advice to diagnose our problem? Thank you-

Hello,
I am growing tomatoes in Tucson for the first time. I have two Early Girl plants in pots. One of the Early Girl plants has 19 unripe tomatoes on it, in various stages of growth. (I planted on March 3.) Should I remove some of these tomatoes so the others will get more energy to grow, and if so, how many should I think about removing? Thanks,
Lisa Vernon
