[Arid_gardener] Question from Home-Hort WWW page

New to AZ, came from Covina/San Luis Obispo CA.  Want to plant a large shade tree in my spacious but arid front driveway area (west side).  I will install a drip system.  Considering Jacaranda, Ficus Nitida, Acacia Saligna, and others.  Since I want a circular planter wall for decorative purposes and to plant color, I am concerned whether any of these trees can tolerate a flower bed over the root system?
