Amanda, it has been my experience that your local plant nursery is the best
place to ask questions of this nature. They won't deliberately lead you
astray and I have found that most of them are pretty savvy about local
horticulture. Further, if the species is on their shelf, you can be pretty
sure that, with proper culture, it will flourish in your Salt River Basin
landscape.
A good technique is to visit some of the State and Federal grounds in the
area and see what thrives there. Most use professional landscapers. Drive up
and down streets and see what flourishes in your nieghbor's yards. Flatter
them by knocking on their doors to inquire.
If you want something you can eat, most citrus loves this climate and many
home owners have at least one. I have about 10 species that flourish in my
yard but I like plants that I can feed off.
