[Arid_gardener] Spraying for weeds

We had our back yard sod removed in preparation for new landscaping.  
The landscaper planned to spray to kill the weeds and grass...but it is 
all dirt out there right now.   Will spraying at this point do any good? 

I thought we needed to water the ground well, let weed and old grass 
sprouts grow up and then spray with a systemic killer.  And then maybe 
do it a couple more times!  We plan to sod Mid-Iron where there was St. 
Augustine and burmuda.

Your advice would be MUCH appreciated!
