[Arid_gardener] Bee Hive Removal

Hi Bill,
I can't take them off your hands, but I will track down a number for a bee
removal service for you.
In the meanwhile, I strongly recommend that you don't spray them with
insecticide, for at least two reasons: first, self-interest, and second,
self-interest.
The more immediate self-interest is your safety. Many honey bees in this
region are Africanized. Africanized bees can and do attack when their hive
is threatened, and that is dangerous for you. Insecticide cannot kill them
fast enough to prevent them from trying to return the favor.
The perhaps less obvious self-interest is the value of honey bees and their
current status. Honey bee populations are declining in the United States at
a rate that is causing alarm among scientists, farmers and orchardists. A
huge percentage of the food we eat, both what we grow in our yards and what
we buy commercially, is fully dependent on pollination by honey bees. Honey
bee populations should be protected -- though you don't want them in your
roof, obviously.
Also, depending on where they are, you might find that they're not building
a hive, but are rather resting during their swarming. Bees swarm this time
of year, off in search of a new home, and during the swarm they stop and
rest for a bit, hanging together in a large mass before flying off again.
With any luck, this is what you're seeing.
I don't have the bee removal number to hand this evening, but I will find it
for you tomorrow morning.
In the meanwhile, if they are building a nest, try to keep children and pets
away from the area, and avoid disturbing the bees by getting too near or
causing loud noises.
I hope this helps,
Tyler

I have a Bee hive forming in the roof of my house. They look like Honey
Bees, certainly not wasps. Anyone out there interested in relocating the
population or should I just break out the insecticide?
