Hi Randy,
You're in luck. There are a number of large mature Sissoos growing in the
Old Town Scottsdale area. Around some of the municipal buildings and on the
streets. If memory serves, there are some around Goldwater and Indian
School that are in good shape.
Sissoo would be a great tree for your courtyard - presuming you are removing
most of the concrete. Sissoo does well with reflected heat and is a good
choice for a West-facing wall, so a courtyard would probably be fine. Be
certain that whatever you use around the tree is permeable, so that the tree
can get water in a wide area to develop a wide and strong root system.
You mentioned yellowing leaves in your e-mail subject line. Sissoos are
partially deciduous and this time of year is when you often see the leaves
yellowing and falling, so this is probably normal.
I hope this helps,
Tyler

Subject: [Arid_gardener] Sissoo Tree leaves turning yellow
I have a medium size sisoo growing and have planted a small one by my
driveway. I see them planted everywhere now, but have not seen any older
ones, and was wondering if you knew of any mature ones to look at to see the
end result. I live in south Scottsdale. Also, I wanted to turn part of my
driveway into a courtyard with a tree in the middle, but the reflected heat
would rule out most trees, probably too hot for a sisoo?...any suggestions,
I thought a mesquite may get too large down the road, some are enormous....
thanks,
randy
