Hi Melody,
I don't have any personal experience with the Cardinal Vine, but I did
manage to track down a little bit of information that I hope will be useful
to you.
First, I understand that the Cardinal climbing vine is a hybrid between
Ipomoea quamoclit (the Cypress Vine) and another plant called I. coccinea.
It is a pretty strong climber and sounds like it will cover a clothes line
pretty well. As to being invasive, I think that will depend on how much it
likes growing in Arizona. I did see references to it re-seeding very easily
in Central Texas, but also saw references to it not doing well in very dry
soil, so I suspect it will re-seed only in areas where it finds moisture.
Your best bet would be to pay attention to where any seedling come up, and
get them while they're young. From what I read, it doesn't sound like it
will spread into your grass areas, other than perhaps by seed. I also read
that while it will die back in cold weather, it will return in the Spring.
I'm afraid that was bout all i could track down.
I hope this helps,
Tyler

Good day, I am resending this e-mail hoping for some help. I found another
name for the Cardinal Climbing Vine. It is Cypress vine. The plants are now
1 1/2" - 2" tall with some true leaves.
Again,thank-you for the time & effort put forth on this site, this is
truly a great tool for us gardeners here in Az. & other states.

Hello & thank-you for this great tool. I am perplexed. I planted Cardinal
Climbing Vine from seed. It will be trailing across my clothes line to
provide shade for part of my garden. My question: Is this vine as evasive to
not plant next to lawn or garden? I have done so much research on this vine
that now I am perplexed. I have read that it will die off in the winter, but
so does wild morning glory & come back with avengement & roots that go to
China. Any help is greatly appreciated.
