The UC Extension has a lot of websites pertaining to pomegranates. Google
with
 "pomegranate pruning site:ucdavis.edu"

At most of these websites UC recommends pruning in January and June. In
Phoenix I used to prune in January at the dormant stage.

For a long time I was looking for guidance on how to trim my pomegranate
tree. I found your answer and it is very thorough and helpful. Thank you. I
have one more question, I live in Southern California and I have a
"Wonderful" and a seedless pomegranate tree and the shoot offs or as you
categorized them "suckers" are coming off now, can I trim them now which is
May?
