Although you haven't recently seen the p.v.beetle or its exit holes, you
can't rule it out. The grubs feed on the roots for several years before
emerging after about mid June. According to the literature, there isn't
much you can do about it other than discourage it by maintaining a healthy
tree (as in
http://cals.arizona.edu/pubs/garden/az1429.pdf )
I have also seen occasional p.v. beetles over the years but have yet to lose
a tree. Which is not to say it isn't possible.
