2 VALENTINE'S BAKE SALE!!

Come and pick up some tasty Valentine's treats for you or a loved one this Wednesday!  The Family Studies and Human Development Ambassadors will be having a bake sale Wednesday, February 13th from 10am-3pm at the North East corner of the Family and Consumer Sciences Building.  Valentine's themed cupcakes, cookies, and more will all be available for special gift wrapping. Please help our student organization raise funds so we can continue providing for families in need!

3 CALL FOR NOMINATIONS - RESEARCH CAREER DEVELOPMENT AWARD

This is the call for nominations for the Research Career Development award. Let's give our outstanding faculty the recognition they deserve. Established as part of the CALS Millennium Oversight Committee's effort, the Research Career Development Award was created to provide special support for research by faculty who have assumed an unusually heavy teaching, advising, extension and/or service load in response to unit needs during the past two to three years. An award of approximately $5000 may be given to one or two faculty in CALS annually.

4 ADMINISTRATOR OF THE YEAR NOMINATIONS DUE FEBRUARY 15

This message is to solicit nominations for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Administrator of the Year Award. This award was instituted in 2003 and to date the recipients are: Rob Leonard, Soyeon Shim, Peter Wierenga, Don Slack, Joe Hiller, and Linda Houtkooper. The guidelines for nominations can be found at the URL below. Nominations will now be active for a three-year period. The deadline for nominations is close of work on February 15, 2008. The winner will be announced at the CALS Spring Faculty/Staff Meeting on March 27th.
This college has a large number of outstanding administrators who work hard to make good things happen. These deserving individuals cannot be recognized unless they are nominated. Thanks in advance for your attention to this important CALS recognition program.

5 DENNIS AND CHRIS MILLER SPEAKERS' SERIES IN RETAILING AND CONSUMER SCIENCES

Gad Saad, Ph.D., Associate Professor Marketing at Concordia University (Montreal, Canada) will present a seminar of his newly released book The Evolutionary Bases of Consumption.  The presentation titled "Evolutionary Theory & Consumption" will be held on Monday, February 18, 2008, 1:00p.m.-2:30 p.m. in the Catalina Room, Student Union. Dr. Saad will discuss ongoing and recently completed empirical projects within this research stream in addition to his presentation of his new book. This seminar is sponsored by Dennis and Chris Miller Speakers' Series in Retailing and Consumer Sciences and The Terry J. Lundgren Center for Retailing, Retailing and Consumer Sciences, The Norton School of Family and Consumer Sciences.

6 CALS FACULTY DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP

The CALS Office of Academic Programs will be presenting a faculty development workshop on Wednesday, February 13 from 12:00 - 1:30 p.m. in the Santa Rita Room, Student Union. The presenter for this workshop is Dr. Terri Riffe, Director with the University Teaching Center. Her topic will be "Getting Them There: Strategies for Increasing Attendance If You Teach It, Will They Come?"  (Explore why students attend or don't attend class. What factors most influence student attendance? Which strategies to increase attendance work from the point of view of students? What are your beliefs about student attendance and how do you convey them? Come and enjoy lunch (is food influential in your decision to attend this session?) and learn more about the complex issues of attendance. Lunch will be provided for all workshop attendees. 7 PIMA COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY'S GRANTS INFORMATION CENTER BROWN BAG

Learn about the extensive, free, grantseeking resources available at the public library.  This "Grants for Lunch" presentation will be give by Karen Koevary, Reference Librarian, Pima County Public Library, Joel D. Valdez Main Library. 8 GRANTSEEKING BASICS FOR NONPROFITS WORKSHOP (PIMA COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY)

The Pima County Public Library Grants and Nonprofit Information Center will host a free workshop on Wednesday, February 27 from 5:15pm - 7:30pm. GrantsAlert is a new service to assist CALS faculty, staff, and students identify grant and fellowship opportunities as well as related professional development activities. An electronic issue will be sent out periodically to all persons who have subscribed to the service.  The subscription page is located at: http://cals.arizona.edu/aes/grants/subscribe/
A searchable database of past grants announcements and an archive of past issues will soon be available from a website titled Grants and Fellowships that will be accessible from the CALS Employees web page.

10 CALS YEAR-TO-YEAR APPOINTED PROFESSIONAL AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE

The CALS Year-to-Year Appointed Professional Award for Excellence has been created to recognize and honor outstanding achievements and contributions by an individual in a year-to-year appointed personnel position.  Nominations for this award may be made by any full-time employee or student in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and are due to Alma Sperr in the CALS Administrative Services office, Forbes 320A, no later than Friday, February 22, 2008.  Nomination procedures and guidelines for the award can be found at the URL listed below.  The awardee will receive a $1,000 check and a plaque at the CALS Spring Faculty/Staff meeting on March 27, 2008.
