12/16/11. Scholars, you all did really well on the final. Great job!! For those that didn't take the final, it hurt your grade so try not to ever let this happen. The grades are all posted and the points per exam and extra credit are posted on the class website.
Once again, it was a pleasure teaching this class. It always is. Good luck in your career trajectories, and have a great holiday! Barry Pryor
12/7/11. Well, scholars, its been a pleasure learning about plant pathology with you this semester. But we still have some last items on our agenda. Remember, the plant disease summaries are due in my email box on Dec. 10. No exceptions.. The final is on Dec. 13., 10:30-12:30 in Marley 230. NOTE: THE FINAL TIME IS EARLIER THAN OUR REGULAR CLASS TIME!. Monica will hold a study session on Friday from 11-1 in Marley 230. I have posted a practice test for the final on the class website. The final will cover chapters 7, 10, and 11. All lectures and study notes have been posted. NOTE, there are two lectures and two study guides for chapter 10, and two lectures and one study guide for chapter 11. Also posted is a second summary of your current points to date including your extra credit for lab reports and disease collections. Please review to make sure my points match the points you think you have.
And regarding the disease collections, you can pick them up at my office as I have finished grading them. Some of your did a great job! Some of you did a poor job. Many of you tried to put in abiotic diseases into the collection and so full points weren't given. You can see what you received for your collection on the point summary sheet and come by my office to pick up your collection and to discuss exactly where points were given and where points were not. Study hard for the final!!
12/1/11. There are two lectures and handouts from Chapter 10. I have modified both and the modified version are now posted on the class website. If you have earlier versions, please replace them with these.
11/31/11. So you all know that Dec 6th, DURING CLASS TIME, is the deadline for turning in your plant disease collection. You can get up to 20 pts extra credit for this.
There is one last opportunity for earning up to 20 pts extra credit, and that is by writing 2 one-page summaries of 2 different plant diseases. Please go to the Epidemiology lecture presentation posted on the class website. the first slide explains it all. If you are interested in doing this, please email me as per the instructiongs.
And as a final reminder, the final exam is NOT comprehensive. It only coveres the last few lectures.
Study hard!!
11/23/11. Ok, I've posted the Abiotic Disease lecture and handout. Also, I've posted the Disease Collection Instructions for those who will need them. They are the same as presented in the second week of class with just a little more detail. Read them carefully. The collections are due to me in class on Dec 6th. No exceptions. If you don't have 10, turn it what you have. Here's a free-be. Everyone can use mistletoe. And everyone can also use one other disease noted on our UofA Plant Disease tour. But that's it. All others have to be something else. You have had all semester to work on this so there should be no excuses about not having time.
Also, I will be posting the grades for everyone to date on the class website. Look for an Excell spreadsheet on Friday or Saturday. You need 360 pts for an A, 320 pts for a B, 280 pts for a C, and 240 pts for a D. Do the math and figure out how well you will need to do on the final to get the grade you want. And also to figure out if you need to do the extra credit plant disease collection (worth 20 pts) and the last extra credit assignment we'll disuss in class on Tues (also worth 20 pts). Come see me if you have any questions. We're down to the wire!!!
11/15/11. I know that you all have been studying very hard. Excellent! Similar to the last test, there will be a diseae cycle I will want you to draw. I will give you a choice of two. And these two will be selected from the following diseases:
late blight of potato
downy mildew of grape
fireblight of apple
rootknot nematode on cotton
dodder on tomato
good luck!
11/13/11. The practice test and the last lecture and study notes have been posted. Study hard!!! Exam on Thursday! And I'd like to see the class average at 80% or above. There's a lot of material to go over so use all your study techniques to organize it all in you mind.
And after the test, work on you disease collections if you need those extra 20 POINTS!! Good luck.
11/2/11. For anyone who did not pick up a handout in the second Koch's postulates lab, it is now posted on the class website. On this handout is instructions on how to prepare your Koch's postulates lab reports. These are due in my email box AS AN ATTACHMENT this Friday at 23:59 hours. No exceptions. When writing, prepare your report in MLA format (everyone should know what this is, right? Ask your friends if you don't). And Monica and I will not be around on Friday so if you have any questions you better ask us on Thursday. Good luck!!
10/27/11. A quick announcement, make sure to check your inoculated fruit today for your notes and/or pictures. We'll be throwing them away at the end of the day. They're getting really rotten!
10/20/11. Remember we have a midterm on Tuesday. As I explained in lab today, there will be a 10 pt question requiring you to draw a disease cycle. On the exam I will ask you to draw one of two listed. These selection of two will come from these five disease: apple scab, ergot of rye, stem rust of wheat, powdery mildew of rose, and brown rot of stone fruit. Know all of you disease cycles but be most familiar with these five.
I will post a practice exam in just a minute. Attend the review sessions tomorrow if you need some review time. Good luck!!
10/19/11. Ok, everyone, so you all know we have the 2nd Koch's postulate's lab tomorrow, right? We'll also have a bunch of fungal cultures set out for you to examine, make slides of, and basically just explore fungal diversity. We'll have some nematodes and nematode diseases for display as well, courtesy of Dr. McClure, the UofA nematologist who will be presenting the nematode lecture in a few weeks. An easy lab that should be quite interesting as well. So when you come into the lab, make sure you come into the same section you attended before. Your lab partner will be there and we'll be sure to have enought room. I don't want everyone trying to come to the 12:30 lab....we just won't fit.
Here is a list of fruit/vegetables I will bring to the lab for reinoculations. Let me know if your fruit is not listed.... not everyone labeled their plates correctly. Nectarines, pears, apples, mango, tomatoes, lemons, squash, pepper, and onion. Did I leave anyone out??
I'll hand out a summary of how I want the lab reports to be completed. Remember, there is a possibility of 20 pts extra credit if these are done correctly.
We also have a test on Tuesday. A practice test will be posted tonight. Monica will hold review sessions on Friday 11-1 in Marley 230, and at 4-6 in Marley 341H (on the third floor). Come with questions and ready to discuss. This is a great opportunity to prepare for the exam and this is especially important for those who didn't do well the last test.
10/5/11. I spoke with Monica and she thinks that this Friday from 4 to 6pm would be good time for a study session, and Marley 230 is available. For those students who can't make it, they can come see her during her office hours. And her email is monicaa@email.arizona.edu. You can also come by my office or the lab with questions most anytime and hopefully can catch either Monica or I. Cheers.
9/30/11. Ok, now that we've begun to isolate from our infected fruits and vegetables, fungi and bacteria will start to grow out from the plant tissue. And often there are more than one thing growing out so every team needs to subculure the suspect pathogen or pathogens onto new and clean plates of agar so that they can get their organisms into pure culture. On Monday or Tuesday, one or both members of each team will need to come into my lab to do this. My lab is on the 5th floor of the Marley building, room 511. Monica will be in there from 11 to 4 both days and will help you out. It should only take 10-15 minutes Remember, this must be done on Monday or Tuesday or else some fungi will overgrow all others on the plate and you will not be able to recover the slow growers.
Also, Monica mentioned that she would provide additional opportunity for study sessions and she suggested Wed from 2-4, or Friday from 11-1 or 4-6. So come into class on Tuesday with your preference.
9/28/11. The handout for the Kock's postulate lab is posted on the class website. Please print it out and review it prior to coming to lab on Thursday in Marley 217. Now, you need to sign up for one of the time slots available. If you haven't already done this, please email me with your preference, 11-12:30 or 12:30-2. As I've said, I can't fit everyone in the lab into one time slot so I need half to go to each section. Right now there are only 5 spaces left in the 12:30-2 section. There are 11 spaces left in the 11-12:30 section. IF YOU HAVEN'T SIGNED UP FOR A SECTION, YOU CAN'T PARTICIPATE IN THAT SECTION. So please sugn up.
Following the completion of the Kock's postulate lab (two lab periods), you can write up a brief lab report for 10 pts extra credit. I'll give you instructions later on what I want in the lab report. If you can't or don't want to participate in the lab, there will be an alternative opportunity for the 10 pts extra credit. See you tomorrow, and remember to print out the lab handout.
9/27/11. The lectures for Intro to Fungi and Ascomycete lecture is posted, as are the associated handouts. If you haven't picked up your test, come see me if you want it. Also, if you want to argue points, please see me as well.
9/23/11. Ok, class, after carefull consideration I've decided to adjust the class scores for the last test. The low class average really had me puzzled because it was such a different outcome than I've seen for the last 7 years. I've used the same powerpoints, only slightly modified, and have presented the lectures as I usually do (some good, some bad), and the only thing that I can think that was different is that we're now using a new text book. Could that have impacted our learning outcomes??
In any event..... everyone gets an extra 8 points!! Hurray!! I hope this stimulates all to work very hard and bring that class average up this next test. Ok? And remember Monica offered to hold additional study sessions so hold her to that committment. Cheers.
9/15/11. I just posted a practice test in the presentation section of the website, so download it and work through it. It will give you a good sense of what you need to know and at what depth. Study hard!! Test on Tuesday.
Monica will hold a review session on Monday evening in Marley 230, 7-9 pm. Please attend if you want some assistance in reviewing the material. Also, Monica and I will be around most of the days Monday and Tuesday so come by if you have questions.
9/6/11. Just posted an update to the syllabus. I'm not sure why I had no class listed for Sept 8 but, yes, there is class! Also, I'm trying to get caught up with integrating my previous lecture format with this new book. Just remember, my lectures and handouts are most important. And, yes, I will try to be more prompt in posting those. Cheers!
8/15/11. Greetings!!!
Welcome to PLP 305, perhaps the most interesting course in all the University!
I just wanted to send you all a quick email for the link to the class website (no, I don't have it up on D2L yet! Rats!). But the website will function as the class link just the same. The URL is http://ag.arizona.edu/plp/courses/plp305/. For lecture presentations the user name is plp305 and the password is pathogens (what else?!!). Now the important thing for you right now is to get the book, which is different from the last year, and is listed on the class website now. It is Essential Plant Pathology, 2nd Edition, 2010, by Schumann and D'Arcy. It is an excellent book with a lot of interactive exercises, but its new to me this year so this week I will be putting together a completely new lecture series to match the order of the book. Stay tuned and log onto the website now and then to check for new announcements. I will update you more when class starts. See you on Tuesday!! And we still have a few more seats available in the class so tell your friends. It'll be a great semester!
