Annual Progress Report and Summary by Major Advisor

It is required that all Graduate Students prepare an Annual Graduate Student Progress Report (APR) and have their Major Advisor complete the Annual Summary by Major Advisor each year that they are enrolled in the graduate program (see above). The progress reports and summaries are submitted by November 30 to the GPOC for review. Once the APR is electronically submitted, a copy will be returned to the student via email. Students should keep this copy of their APR to facilitate preparation in subsequent years.

General Summary of Degree Requirements

Majoring in Plant Sciences/Plant Pathology

Graduate students majoring in Plant Sciences or Plant Pathology must meet all Graduate College requirements as stated in the catalog at the time the student enters the Program (in addition to any Departmental requirements.) Students must develop and carry out a research program and write a formal thesis or dissertation acceptable to the Graduate College. For a non-thesis Master’s Degree, a report must be written and presented to the student’s Advisory Committee for approval.

Normal Course Loads

The Graduate College no longer has a maximum enrollment policy. While regular graduate status in a degree program is maintained by registering for a minimum of 3 units of graduate level course work for each semester during the academic year, graduate students in Plant Sciences receiving an assistantship are required to take 10 units of graduate level course work each semester. Graduate students need not register for graduate units during summer sessions unless they will be taking their Comprehensive Examinations or scheduling their final oral defense during this time.
Graduate students may not take regular course work for a pass/fail grade. Only courses designated “rpt.” in the Graduate Catalog may be repeated. All Incompletes revert to an “E” after one year. Doctoral and Master’s students may apply for no more than 12 units of non-degree coursework to their degree.

Plant Sciences Ph.D. Programs

Requirements

The equivalent of at least six semesters of full-time graduate study is required for the Ph.D. A minimum of 36 units of course work in the area of the major subject, 9 units in the minor subject, and 18 units of dissertation must be completed. All requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy must be completed within 5 years of passing the Comprehensive Exam. Should a student not finish within that time period, he or she may be allowed to re-take the Comprehensive Exam with permission of the Program, and then proceed to complete other requirements, e.g., the dissertation. To meet the minimum Graduate College “in residence” requirement, the student must complete a minimum of 30 units of graduate credit taken at The University of Arizona (18 units of dissertation plus 12 units of regular graded coursework taken at The University of Arizona). Units transferred from other institutions must have received graduate credit and have a grade of A or B. Registration is required in the semester or summer session when the Comprehensive Examinations or Final Oral Defense Examinations are scheduled. A cumulative GPA of 3.000 or higher is required for completion of degree requirements.
