Division of Plant Pathology and Microbiology
Students are required to enroll in the Interdisciplinary Plant Sciences (PLS 696A) and the Department of Plant Sciences (PLP596 A) Seminars every semester and give at least three seminars during their Ph.D. program. In addition, PLP 550 and 551 and three semesters of Journal Club (PLP 695A) are core courses required by the Division of Plant Pathology and Microbiology. Ph.D. Plan of Study

Students completing their 4th semester must file a Doctoral Plan of Study with the Graduate College. This form lists the student’s coursework and must be signed by Department Heads and Advisors in the major and minor subject areas before submission. Students are required to have a minimum of 36 units of course work in the major and 9 units of course work in the minor. With the Minor Department’s approval, six undergraduate 400 level units may be used in the minor area to satisfy the minor requirement. A total of 12 units of graduate credit earned as an undergraduate senior, and/or in graduate Non Degree Status may be applied for credit toward a doctoral degree. At least 50% of the course work on the Plan of Study must be graded A, B, or C.

Minor Subject Area

The Graduate College requires that two tenure or continuing track members from another department be represented on all Ph.D. Advisory Committees. These representatives recommend 9 units of course work in the minor subject area based on the student’s individual interests. Requirements for a specific minor subject area may change. Students should confer with their Minor Advisory Committee Members or Department that represents the minor subject for specific requirements.

Individual Studies and Research Credit

Graduate students may receive course work credit for independent study projects and research by enrolling in various courses as described briefly below. Independent Study information is found under the Special Grades heading.

PL S/PL P 599

Independent work, which cannot be classified as actual research.

PL S/PL P 699

Rotations, first/second semester (Plant Sciences Degree Program).

PL S/PL P 900

Individual research not related to thesis or dissertation preparation.

PL S/PL P 920

Research for the doctoral dissertation. Total required and allowable
units =18.

PL S/PL P 930

Supplementary registration for students who have completed all course requirements or their advanced degree programs. May be used concurrently with other enrollments to bring total number of units to the required minimum.

Note: Students receive a K grade for 920 and/or 930 units, as it is assumed that work on the dissertation is continuing. At degree completion, the Ks are converted to an S or P grade. When registering, the section number is that of the faculty member and is obtained from the faculty member or in Forbes 319.
